Fairfax County Government Center houses the main offices for the Fairfax Virginia local government and is the meeting place for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Located off of Government Center Parkway in Fairfax Virginia, the center is comprised of several buildings that make up the Center and cater to different areas of the government, such as Family Services, Parks and Recreation, and Community Services.
The above is useful information to know, but honestly it’s rather boring. The best part of the Fairfax County Government Center is when the Celebrate Fairfax Festival is held in its large parking lot every June. The spaces are filled with food trucks, rides, games and stages where live music is played. It might only happen once a year but when it does the whole of Fairfax County converges on the Fairfax County Government Center for 3 days of fun and fireworks, making it the center of the community.
When I was a girl, I lived in Alden Glen, a subdivision of townhouses that backs to the Fairfax County Government Center, and every night of the festival we would walk across the field to the hill directly across from the Center to watch the fireworks go off and listen to the sounds of the fair. And because we had to put up with the noise from the festival, everyone in the surrounding neighborhoods got four free tickets per household. For a child, that was the perfect place to live.
Glen Alden’s townhouses range from 1,200 square feet to 1,900 square feet and most homes have 3 bedrooms and 2.5 to 3 bathrooms. Each home has a basement and reserved parking in front of the homes. Most homes have either a deck or fenced in backyard, and all the homes back either to a playground, woods, or a large drainage field, which is perfect for playing sports.
If I had continued to live in Alden Glen, I would have gone first to Eagle View Elementary School, than to Lanier Middle School, and finally to either Chantilly High School or Fairfax High School, all of which are under 3 miles from Alden Glen and the Fairfax County Government Center.
Fairfax Corner, which is just down the street from the Fairfax County Government Center, wasn’t built when I lived around there, but is now a small center in itself, full of shops and restaurants and businesses, as well as providing an outdoor space with a fountain for year round arts, crafts, and music events. Only a few minutes walk from the Fairfax County Government Center and surrounding subdivisions like Alden Glen and Fairfax Center Landbay, Fairfax Corner is an awesome spot to spend the day or grab dinner after work, and is also close to subdivisions like Fair Ridge and Birch Pond.
The Fairfax County Government Center, although a practical place for performing practical tasks, is actually a far more diverse and exciting location than one might expect. In addition to the Festival and Fairfax Corner, there are also several trails that run through the woods down to the pond behind the Center, perfect for walking or biking and nature trips to observe pond life. The entire area is laid out well and is the perfect place for anyone to live or grow up.
